If the person is receiving palliative care, follow the plan provided by their care team. Otherwise, call 000.
Ambulance officers will confirm the death, police will attend to ensure there are no suspicious circumstances, and the person’s doctor will be contacted to provide the necessary documentation.
Once these steps are complete, you may contact a funeral director to transfer your loved one into their care. We are available 24 hours a day to assist you.
If further information is needed before a cause of death can be confirmed, the authorities will guide you through the process and keep you informed.
If Someone Dies in a Nursing Home
Nursing home staff will arrange for a doctor to confirm the death and will notify family members. Once the family is ready, a funeral director can be contacted to transfer your loved one into their care.
If Someone Dies in Hospital
Hospital staff will manage the necessary medical documentation and release procedures. Once the family has chosen a funeral director, arrangements can be made for transfer into their care. Release times vary between hospitals.
If a death is sudden, unexpected, accidental, or the cause of death is unclear, the matter may be referred to the Coroner. In these circumstances, your loved one will be transferred to the Coroner’s care while the necessary investigations are carried out.
If a post-mortem examination is required, funeral arrangements may be delayed slightly until the Coroner has completed their process and released your loved one into our care.
